India condemns the Gaza conflict's toll on civilians and calls for action at the U.N. General Assembly

India’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, has expressed India’s deep concern about the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which is now in its fifth month. Addressing the U.N., Kamboj emphasized India’s opposition to the loss of civilian lives and the humanitarian crisis that ensued at the General Assembly meeting on the ‘Use of Veto’, deeming it unacceptable.

Kamboj emphasized that the conflict had a disproportionate impact on civilian populations, particularly women and children, and urged all stakeholders to prioritize preventing further violence and hostilities.  Kamboj also emphasized the importance of scaling up humanitarian aid to Gaza to align India’s position on the conflict. New Delhi strongly condemned the deaths of civilians and reaffirmed its commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms. Kamboj stressed the necessity of direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine to achieve lasting peace, while also highlighting India’s support for a two-state solution.

In a separate address to a special General Assembly meeting on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Kamboj expressed concern over allegations that UNRWA employees were involved in the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel. India has been actively supporting Palestinian refugees, contributing to the cause. Kamboj pointed out that India has increased its annual contribution to $5 million for UNRWA. Committing to supporting UNRWA’s core programs and services, including education, healthcare, and relief efforts for Palestinian refugees.
