In a precautionary move to ensure the safety of motorists, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway witnessed a temporary closure of over two hours on July 27, 2023. The decision was taken in response to a massive landslide caused by heavy monsoon rains in the region. The incident took place near the Adoshi tunnel, leading to authorities taking quick action to prevent any accidents or casualties.
The landslide was triggered by the ceaseless downpour, resulting in a significant amount of debris obstructing both carriageways of the busy expressway. Commuters were left stranded as the expressway, which serves as a vital link between two major cities in India, turned out to be inaccessible. The authorities, at the next moment, dispatched rescue teams and emergency response units to the scene to control the situation and clear the debris.
Recognizing the hazards posed by the unstable terrain, this closure aimed to prevent any mishaps that could have occurred due to falling rocks or landslides. Public announcements were made through various communication channels to inform motorists about the temporary suspension and to urge them to look for alternative routes.
The closure of the expressway led to significant traffic disruptions and inconveniences for thousands of travelers. In light of this incident, the authorities have requested motorists to take caution while driving during the monsoon season, especially in hilly regions because of landslides. Additionally, they have pledged to implement further safety measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
