The first female representative from Nagaland to the Rajya Sabha, S Phangnon Konyak, presided over the House on Tuesday. On July 17, 2023, she was selected as the first woman from Nagaland to the panel of vice presidents, making history.

Last Monday, the chairman, Jagdeep Dhankhar, proposed four women for the panel of vice-chairmen. All of the female candidates for the panel have recently been elected as members of parliament. Eight people make up the newly formed panel ahead of the monsoon session, with half of them being female. For the first time in Rajya Sabha history, the panel of vice-chairmen includes an equal number of male and female members.

PT Usha is one of the women members nominated to the panel last week. Usha, a Padma Shri recipient and Rajya Sabha nominee was an athlete. She participates in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ Defense Committee, Consultative Committee, and Ethics Committee.

Who is S Phangnon Konyak?

S. Phangnon Konyak, a BJP member, became the first woman from Nagaland to be elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 2022. She is also the second woman from the state to be elected to the State Legislative Assembly or the House of Parliament. She is a participant in the North Eastern Development Ministry’s Consultative Committee on Transport, Tourism, and Culture. Member of the North-Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences’ Governing Council and the House Committee on Women’s Empowerment.
