On August 13th a mass shooting occurred in Pittsylvania County, Virginia’s southern part, resulting in several law enforcement officers being injured. According to Pittsylvania County Sheriff , Michael W.Taylor, the incident unfolded when officers were executing warrants, leading to multiple officers being wounded. This happened when 36-year old Lehnard refused to cooperate and openly fired the officers. Congressman John McGuire, representing Virginia’s 5th district, confirmed the event via a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressing concern and support for those affected. He said “we are closely following the situation and keeping everyone affected in our hearts during this difficult time.”
Emergency response teams from multiple agencies responded to the scene. In addition to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, Amherst County Sheriff’s Office, Danville Police Department, Virginia State Police, Gretna Fire and Rescue, Hurt Fire Department, U.S. Marshals, and a Central Helicopter were all ready to assist during this crisis.
Law enforcement officials made numerous attempts to communicate with Lehnerd through negotiation teams, but those efforts were unsuccessful. After hours of trying to establish contact, specially trained SWAT team members entered the residence. Lehnerd was taken into custody peacefully around 11 p.m., ending the hours-long standoff.
The community has been left shaken by the shooting reported by local news outlet WDBJ 7. Witnesses described a chaotic scene with officers trying their best to control the situation and provide the required aid.
“All three deputies are doing well. Naturally they’re shaken up by the experience, but they’re in the process of healing.” Taylor stated. The chaos lasted for several hours but as per Sheriff Taylor the suspect has been taken into custody.
A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. in the Pittsylvania County General District Court. Additional charges are anticipated.
The Associated Press reports that Pittsylvania County is located along the state’s southern border with North Carolina, about 98 miles (158 kilometers) northwest of Raleigh, North Carolina.
