A Pune-based Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) allegedly shot his wife and nephew dead before shooting himself at his bungalow in Baner on July 24, 2023.

The 57-year-old officer, who has been identified as ACP Bharat Gaikwad, was posted at Amravati. He had come home to meet his family. “On Monday, at around 3.30 am, the ACP allegedly shot his wife in the head. Hearing the gunshot, his son and nephew came running. The moment they opened the door, he allegedly shot a bullet at his nephew, who got shot in the chest,” an official from Chaturshringi Police Station said, according to an NDTV report.

“Later, he shot himself in the head. All three people died on the spot”, he added.

The investigations revealed that ACP Bharat Gaikwad’s mother, two sons, and other family members were present in the house when the incident took place, however, nobody could stop it.

Shashikant Borate, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said, “We have not found any suicide note until now, but a probe is on to confirm the cause behind this incident.”

ACP’s wife has been identified as Moni Gaikwad (44), and his nephew has been identified as Deepak (35). As per reports, a probe is being carried out in the matter.

There has been a streak of similar incidents in the past few months.

In July, IPS Vijayakumar, the Deputy Inspector General of Police from Coimbatore Range also shot himself dead at his residence in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Investigations have not yet revealed the cause for this step taken by him.

A similar case came up last month in June when a former Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Officer fired multiple times at his wife, which resulted in her killing, in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. The killing happened as a consequence of a heated argument.
