On Wednesday, July 26, 2023, the first-ever women’s police station in the Union Territory of Ladakh became operational. An official spokesperson said that this will be a crucial step in safeguarding women and empowering them.

The police station was inaugurated by Ladakh’s Additional Director General of Police, SD Singh Jamwal, who subsequently stated that the police station will work round the clock and ensure immediate support and assistance while dealing with crimes against women. The station will reportedly be like a resource center that will provide guidance and counseling services to women in need during challenging situations. Jamwal, post the inauguration also stressed the importance of women in law enforcement, emphasizing their empowerment.

“The inauguration of the women’s police station in Kargil is a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and secure society. This initiative will enable women to approach the police with greater confidence, knowing that their concerns will be addressed sensitively and expeditiously,” the Ladakh police chief said. According to the spokesperson, the police station will be staffed with a group of skilled and committed female police officers who will be adept at handling situations involving women. Additionally, this initiative will help foster confidence and a spirit of collaboration between the women and police, which will therefore result in a much more secure environment for the residents of Kargil. As per him, this is a step taken by the Ladakh Police Department to enhance the relationship between the community and the police force, and this police station is indicative of the commitment of the officials to the goal.
