Marking the centenary of International Chess Day, July 20, 2024, will be celebrated as the 100th foundation day of FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs). This day was recognised in 2019 post the United Nations approved a resolution. Ahead of the centenary celebrations, even this year like all other years, the game will attract many to come and play. The theme for the year will focus on increasing the reachability of the game. Chess is often correlated with life as the moves we make in the game change our fate, which is similar to life choices. Chess involves an immense amount of dedication and concentration, unlike other board games, this game is about strategising the safety of the queen at all costs.

This date opens multiple arenas for chess enthusiasts to come forward and play, multiple-level competitions are contested on this day. This day is also celebrated as the foundation day of the International Chess Federation.  The same foundation also looks into organising multiple competitions on an international level and acts as a moderator and governing body. It also provides a platform for solidarity between nations which promotes dialogue.

A little historical trivia is that the game originated in India and was called “Chaturanga” which was originated during the Gupta Empire and is considered to be as old as 1500 years. The game is associated with increasing cognitive skills, strategic thinking, and discipline and focus.

181 chess federations from multiple countries are members of FIDE. 605 million players play this game around the world. This year marks the 99th celebration before the centenary, which is why major federations across the country and the world are organising tournaments.

Organisations and groups are organising games for this year’s celebrations in many states of India as well. Under the umbrella of International Chess Day tournaments will be held to promote the game and the spirit.
