In a groundbreaking move to combat traffic congestion and enhance road infrastructure, Pune Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (PSCDCL) is on the verge of revealing the initial phase of its cutting-edge Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS) within the next 15 days.

The much-anticipated ATMS will tackle real-time data to dynamically synchronize traffic signals at multiple intersections across the city. As the installation of equipment for 95 traffic junctions nears completion, Sanjay Kolte, CEO of Pune Smart City, confirmed that the first phase of the ATMS is assured for launch. “The first phase of ATMS will be completed soon as the installation of equipment for 95 traffic junctions is completed. The integration of the system is going on and the project will be commissioned in the next 15 days. Data collected after 15 days through an artificial intelligence system will make the ATMS give expected results,The control room for the ATMS has been made ready at the Smart City office on Sinhagad Road,” said Kolte.

To ensure the easy monitoring and management of traffic flow, a state-of-the-art control room for the ATMS has been established at the Smart City office on Sinhagad Road. PMC Chief Engineer Srinivas Kandul reassured that while installation has been successfully completed at over 70 junctions, this combination of efforts are progressing rapidly. With a budget of Rs 58 crore allocated for operation and maintenance, the ATMS will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will cover 125 junctions, with future plans to extend its coverage to all 261 junctions all over Pune. The ATMS’s new feature lies in its intelligent decision-making process,which helps in real-time demand, traffic conditions, historical data, and the time of day to optimize traffic management. Once operational, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time for commuters, minimizing waiting periods at traffic jams. 

Furthermore, the smart traffic management system will serve during emergency situations by facilitating a smooth ‘green wave’ flow for emergency vehicles, including police, ambulances, fire services, and bus rapid transit (BRT) services. Beyond poor congestion, the implementation of the ATMS is anticipated to contribute to a significant reduction in pollution levels across the city. The ATMS comprises adaptive traffic controllers, traffic lights, traffic sensors, travel time devices, variable message sign boards, and easy integration with the central command control center. The control system boasts a polished video wall, enabling comprehensive monitoring of sensors and cameras positioned throughout Pune.

As the ATMS gears up for its official launch, Pune residents can eagerly anticipate improved traffic flow, reduced travel time, and an overall enhancement in transportation efficiency. With this cutting-edge traffic management system, Pune will emerge as a progressive example of smart city solutions in India.
