Smriti Irani, Union Minister for Women and Child Development, has denounced the awful occurrence depicted in a viral video in which two women are paraded nude by a mob and then gang-raped. Irani condemned the event as “condemnable and downright inhuman” and said she had talked with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

“The horrific video of the sexual assault of 2 women emanating from Manipur is condemnable and downright inhuman. I spoke to CM @NBirenSingh ji, who has informed me that investigation is currently underway & assured that no effort will be spared to bring perpetrators to justice,” Smriti Irani, Union Minister, tweeted on Wednesday.

The Manipur Police Department released an official response to the viral video in a press release signed by Superintendent of Police (SP) K Meghachandra Singh. According to the press release, a complaint has been filed against unknown miscreants at the Nongpok Semai Police Station in the Thoubal district on allegations of kidnapping, gang rape, and murder. It further stated that an investigation has begun and that state police are making an “all-out effort” to apprehend the perpetrators.

The claimed viral video has sparked a political storm ahead of Parliament’s monsoon session, which begins today. According to the Hindustan Times, two Kuki women were paraded nude by a mob on May 4 and gang-raped, while the mob also slaughtered the women’s family members. Manipur has been tainted by violent demonstrations between the Kuki and Meitei groups, which have taken 150 lives and displaced 40,000 people.
